Overview

South Dakota childcare licensing is administered by Child Care Services within the Department of Social Services. Centers serving 13 or more children must be licensed; smaller centers (7–12) may be registered. South Dakota operates a tiered certification system called Building Bright Futures. HB 1207 (2026) created a rural childcare provider tax credit to incentivize new center openings in underserved areas.
